Rugby League proves a big hit at Heywood’s Festival of Sport

Heywood’s Festival of Sport provided many sporting activities to keep children entertained over February half term.

The festival took place at Heywood Sports Village and the children who attended the were able to take part in a range of activities such as football, swimming, dodge ball, rock climbing, archery and rugby league.

Bolton, Bury and Rochdale Rugby League Development group put on tag rugby league sessions for the children on the Wednesday and Thursday of the half term holidays.

Over 60 children took part in rugby league over the two days and the non-contact, all inclusive sessions allowed disabled children to get involved and to learn some rugby league skills too.

Bury Community Rugby League Coach, Jenny Welsby, assisted with the tag rugby league, she said: “Heywood’s Festival of Sport is a great way to get children active over the half term holiday and gives them the opportunity to try sports that they wouldn’t normally get the chance to do.

“The children thoroughly enjoyed the rugby league sessions and the opportunity to show off their passing, kicking and tag skills.”

Bolton, Bury and Rochdale Rugby League Development Group teamed up with Link4Life for the sessions and all of the children who attended the festival were given information on local rugby league clubs, Heywood Tigers and Bury Broncos, for the opportunity to further their rugby league skills.
