Mayfield NWC v Leigh East

Date published: 23 January 2012

Mayfield North West Counties played host to high flying Leigh East at the Mayfield Sports centre on Saturday in what turned out to be a comfortable win.

In terrible conditions with a gale force wind Mayfield were first on the score sheet when youngster Slack powered onto a short ball from Hartley and proved too strong for the opposition to hold, Duffy converted.

The next try came courtesy of good work by the Simpson brothers down the middle of the park, with Ben making the yards and slipping a nice ball to Dunc who then flicked out a wonder pass in the tackle for Sheehan to claim the score.

The Mayfield defence was fantastic with Kershaw, Hartley and Carre putting in massive efforts.

The first time the home side missed a tackle the visitors’ showed their class as the big number seven ghosted through the gap to narrow the scores. Half time 10 – 6.

Mayfield never looked like losing this encounter and when Ben Simpson beat the defender to sprint thirty yards to the line the game was sealed for Mayfield. Leigh pulled another try back but Mayfield had upped their game and the visitors just couldn’t handle them. In fairness it was only the solid graft in defence that prevented Leigh getting back in the hunt.

Battersby, Greaves, and Parker were working overtime now and it told on the young opposition as they crumbled under the pressure exerted by the old heads. Pirouzan capitalised on this as he dummied and jinked his way across the line. Leigh Managed another try as their livewire loose forward made the opening for his team mate. Ben Simpson again carried the ball forward backed well by Slack and Greenwood, he chose to give the pass to Slack who scored under the posts, the conversion from Duffy completed the scoring.

Mayfield took the game 28 – 16 with the MOM award being shared by Ben Simpson and Sheehan, but this was an all round team performance with Parker, Battersby, Greaves and Cockayne standing out along with Duffy Hartley and Carre.
