Mayfield NWC v Woolston
Date published: 13 January 2012
Undefeated Woolston arrived at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday full of confidence after already inflicting two defeats on the home side. Mayfield NWC however were in no mood to make it three out of three.
A strong squad took the field NWC div 4 clash, played in atrocious conditions with a fierce wind.
Following a tough uncompromising start to the game it was the visitors who took the lead after lapse in the home defence allowed them a converted try.
Mayfield fought back well with some punishing tackling which seemed to take its toll on the Warrington side, Aidy Gleeson made the most of this and powered through line to level the scores after converting his own try.
Woolston again pushed forward and again capitalised on a missed tackle when the centre scored another converted try.
Captain Joe Harte read the riot act and Mayfield reacted well pinning the visitors deep in their own half from the kick off, good work from Duncan Simpson and Andy Batts saw the ball move out wide where Gareth Fletcher evaded two tacklers to score, Gleeson converted.
The second half saw Mayfield dominate the game with Jack ashworth and Luke Hartley working well together. Driving runs from Joe Harte and Adam Colclough gave Mayfield good field position and Rob Kershaw made the most of this showing he’d inherited his father’s pace as he raced 20 metres for the converted score. When Gleeson crossed again, and again converted, it looked like the game was won but Woolston had other ideas.
Showing a never say die attitude they fought back and managed to level the scores before the final whistle to make the game a very entertaining draw.
Harte was awarded M.O.M followed closely by Simpson and Ashworth.
This week Mayfield NWC are away at Westhoughton kick off 2.00pm.
