Calland returns to Mayfield
Date published: 25 November 2011
Rugby league legend Matt Calland is making a return to Mayfield Rugby Club.
In an exciting development this week the club announced that Calland will be rejoining the coaching staff and along with Sam Butterworth will form the NCL coaching team.
The move if great news for the club and makes their coaching team, on paper, one of the most potent in amateur rugby league in the country.
Club chairman Simon Howe was over the moon to bring Calland on board.
He said: “We already had a good coach in Sam but when Matt became available and made us aware he was interested in returning, it was an opportunity we just couldn’t ignore.
“Matt’s pedigree is beyond question with experience at every level of the game from amateur to super league.
“The two coaches sat down together on Saturday and discussed the pre season regime and it was decided that although the season has only just finished they would resume training at Hopwood Hall Boxing gym on Tuesday.
“This signifies the intention to do well in the inaugural summer season next year.”
Calland added: “This is a great club with great facilities and we intend to get Mayfield back where they belong.
“Sam and I have known each other a long time and I think we will work well together as a team.
“We will look at the squad over the coming weeks and hopefully bring in a couple of players and then we will offer a serious challenge in the coming season.
“Anybody in the Rochdale area who is serious about playing rugby at the highest amateur level should come down to the sessions and let us help them to achieve that.”
