Wild Boar v Mayfield
Date published: 21 November 2011
An accident on the motorway robbed Mayfield of a couple of players on the way to play St Helen’s Wild Boar on Saturday, hardly the ideal preparation but the Mayfield Academy side still managed to turn out a decent side.
Wild Boar however turned out a better one and outclassed the Rochdale side in this North West counties cup game.
The final score of 44 – 14 was probably a true reflection of the game.
Wild Boar started strongly and ran in three unanswered tries before Mayfield had come to terms with the pace of the game.
Joe Harte made two fantastic try saving tackles to keep the visitors in touch and when Taurean Sheehan danced his way through the pacey defence for a Harte converted try Mayfield at last found some belief in themselves.
Rob Kershaw and Ben Duffy tried hard to find gaps in the defence and eventually Kershaw succeeded after taking a long pass from Greaves he proved too strong as he broke the tackles to go over in the corner.
Luke Hartley then showed a touch of class as he rounded the would be tackler and gave a neat pass to Harte who crashed over and then converted his own try.
The Mayfield lads never backed down all afternoon and certainly gave as good as they got against a very good physical Wild Boar side. Ben Emerson, Tom Greenwood and Ben Widdup again showed they are players to watch, with good all round performances while old heads Dave Widdup, Andy Battersby and Phil Cockayne worked tirelessly for the cause.
The Wild Boar coach awarded the Man of the Match to Ben Simpson for the way his offloads created two of their tries. .
