Mayfield Academy v Woolston

Date published: 31 October 2011

Mayfield NWC entertained Warrington based Woolston at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday.

The game finished 50 – 16 in the visitors’ favour but the score flattered Woolston somewhat.

The turning point in the game was the dismissal of Mayfield second rower Carre after he took exception to a high tackle and swung a punch at the offender.

Woolston started strongly running in two tries in the first ten minutes, the writing looked to be on the wall but after the introduction of the experienced Hilton Mayfield rallied and brought the score back to 10 – 10 with tries from Pirouzan and Hilton.

The middle forty minutes of the game were Mayfield’s best with Hilton taking control of the game in the middle of the park, gaining yards and off loading the ball at every opportunity. Young Ben Emerson benefited from one of these Hilton inspired breaks as he took a great ball on the half way line and showed both power and pace to beat the defence for the try of the game converted by Bamford.

Apart from the sending off the big difference in the two sides was the Woolston centre who crossed for five tries and proved almost unstoppable. The young Mayfield side never gave up with Durrand, Drennan and Battersby having outstanding games.

Man of the Match was Colclough for his non stop running and his energy sapping defensive performance. Other good showings for the home side came from Bamford and Cockayne.
