Mayfield NCL Alliance 48 - 4 Saddleworth
Date published: 19 September 2011
Mayfield’s good start to the season continued as a strong side blew away Saddleworth in yet another local derby.
Bolstered by the inclusion of first team regulars Kumi, West and Duffy Mayfield made the most of the early collision’s and maybe a little too fired up gave away Three penalties in a row leading to unwanted pressure from the visitors.
Marsland and Duffy soon settled the side marching the forward up the pitch and taking control of the game.
It wasn’t long before Mayfield got on the score sheet with a delightful chip by Bradley in to the corner for Yewdale to touchdown.
The message was clear from the touchline to be ruthless and Mayfield duly obliged.
There were try’s for Devlin, Hancock, a brace for the again impressive Hargreaves and a first open age try for James Percy showing silky footwork and a gentle touch you wouldn’t expect from the young powerhouse, by half time the result was a formality.
The second half was a slower affair with the visitors refusing to lie down and complacency was starting to creep into Mayfield’s game but Marsland managed to add a another try with a great solo effort.
Mayfield strayed slightly from the game plan leading to pressure from the visitors and Saddleworth grabbed a consolation try. The visitors scoring seemed to wake Mayfield up and went back to the plays that had seen them build a 42 point lead.
As Mayfield dominated possession in the later stages a well worked move between Marsland and Simpson saw Kristian Duffy smash through the defensive line to score under the sticks. Final score 48 - 4.
Mayfield NCL Alliance are making steady progress with many of the side tasting open age rugby for the first time this season, good performances from Howard, White and both Duffy brothers were supported well by Marsland who took the MOM and very impressive West who topped the tackle count, a mention for the powerful Hargreaves who has now scored five try’s in two games. There will be a true test of Mayfield progression will this week with an away game at Leigh Miners Rangers, but with confidence high and true competition for places there is no reason why this young side can’t go and turn over the Leigh outfit and come away with another two points.
