Rugby legends give something back

Date published: 16 September 2011

Papua New Guinea Rugby League Legend Stanley Gene has signed up to play for the Great Britain Legends when they go head to head with a Rochdale Mayfield select team for charity.

The fundraising game will also see British legends Paul Newlove, Andy Gregory, Gary Connolly and Hugh Waddell take on the Masters of Rochdale Mayfield in an event to raise funds for Life for a Kid, a charity run by the GB All Stars to help disadvantaged children in the UK.

Mr Gene, said: “Rochdale Mayfield are such a wonderful club and for me to make my GB Legends debut there will be an honour. The game has given me so many great things; I feel that it is now time to give something back, through games like this, to those who are in need of help.”

Event organiser, Paul Scanlon-Wells, commented: “This offers players a chance to play against some greats of the game of Rugby League, and for those who [are] maybe too young to remember them, it allows the kids to see who their father is on about when he tells the stories of yesteryear!”

The charity game will go ahead on Sunday (18 September) - small donations are asked for on entry.
