Mayfield swap shin-pads for white caps

Rochdale Mayfield ARLFC has held an inaugural Golf Day at their club. The event, according to the organisers, was so successful that they already have plans for a similar occasion next year, hoping to attract twice as many competing teams.

The Golf Day, to raise funds for the rugby club’s Junior Development section, took place at the Castle Hawk Golf Course and saw 9 teams compete for the esteemed Jack Ashworth Trophy as well as awards for being closest to the pin, or achieving the longest drive.

The winners, the TullyCare team, was composed of participants Danny Kelly, Dave Tully, Karen Goodall and Howard Milligan.

Organiser Paul Scanlon-Wells, said: “It has been a lot of hard work, but we had 30 golfers and had a sponsor for every hole on the course. It takes a lot of money to run a club the size of ours and things like this involve the non-rugby playing sponsors and they feel part of the club and allow us to show them on the day what we are all about.”

Once the tournament had finished the players retired to the clubhouse for a three-course meal and were entertained by the ex glamour model Michelle Marsh, and her group ‘Twisted Heels,’ before the awards were presented.

Club Chairman Simon Howe, concluded: “Today has been marvellous, with the quality of the event, but we have also highlighted the need to provide quality facilities for both seniors and, especially, junior players; to allow them to participate in our sport.”
