Mayfield 38 - 14 Fitton Hill

Mayfield’s newly formed academy side played their opening game of the season on Saturday at the Mayfield Sports Centre in front of good sized crowd.

With coach Chris Brett helping out the first team, the vastly experienced Dean Hartley took the reins and steered his charges to a comprehensive victory over a strong Fitton Hill team.

The team was made up of a perfect blend of youth and experience, with the young players responding well to everything the opposition threw at them.

First blood was to the home side when Tony Bamford made the most of slack marking to power his way over in the corner.

Next up was Pirouzan who rampaged through the defence for a trade mark four pointer. As expected the visitors rallied and capitalized on mistakes to grab a couple of tries back.

Daniel Slack was next on the score sheet as he carried three would be tacklers over the line after some excellent work from the tireless Rob Wells, to score under the sticks, Robinson added the extras.

Not to be outdone, the visitors gathered the ball from the restart and managed to score again to level the scores for half time at fourteen points each.

The second half belonged completely to Mayfield who totally dominated the Fitton Hill team in every department as they ran in twenty four unanswered points.

Sam Robinson was first to capitalize on a good break from Connelly who drew his man and slipped Robinson a peach of a pass to allow him to cross the whitewash untouched.

Next up was Luke Hartley who outpaced the defence when chasing a Connelly kick through. Fitton Hill tried everything to get back in the game but the Mayfield tackling was superb with captain Banner, Kershaw and Howe showing the youngsters the way.

With the visitors tiring Jack Cockayne capped off a great performance with a fine individual try jinking his way through several attempted tackles before sprinting in from the half way line.

The best was saved until last when Sean Hill took a ball from Cockayne on his own ten metre line and out stripped the chasers to score under the sticks, Robinson converted all the second half tries making the full time score 38-14.

This was a great all round performance from the young side who played some good rugby, but above all got the basics right and built from there. There were good performances from Durrand, Drennan and Widdup but the M.O.M award went to Cockayne closely followed by Kershaw.

Team:

Hartley, Drennan, Banner, Durrand, Hill, Cockayne, Robinson, Pirouzan, Kershaw, Widdup, Carre, Bamford, Connelly, Howe, Slack.
