Mayfield v Hunslet

Date published: 18 August 2011

Mayfield’s hopes of a flying start to the season were dashed within minutes of the start of Saturday’s opening fixture against Hunslet Warriors.

Mayfield surrendered possession from the kick off and were immediately put under pressure by the visitors, two converted tries later and the writing was on the wall for the Rochdale side.

That said Mayfield did rally with two converted tries of their own from the ever impressive Tod O’Brien, this lad just keeps getting better.

Hunslet grabbed a couple more scores and Gleeson slotted over a penalty for Mayfield to make the half time score 14-22.

From the restart Mayfield looked strong and the sizeable crowd sensed a comeback on the cards unfortunately nobody told the visiting centre who continued to rampage through the home defence, claiming four tries in all.

There were some glimpses of what the home side had to offer with Matty Moores and Simon Moore putting in some telling work in defence as well as being keen to step up and take the ball forward.

NWC player Andy Lee stepped up to help out Butterworth’s team and certainly didn’t look out of place as he tried to get something out of this game. With minutes to go Paul Lane managed to cross the line to make the final score 18- 40.

“We were well beaten by a better side today and had no complaints about the result. Butterworth said, “however we are devastated to lose on the opening day with home advantage. On the plus side we have several players who were unavailable for this game and will be back in contention for the game at Elland. Mayfield would like to thank Match sponsors, Ace Electrical, the Weavers Arms.”
