Mayfield preview
Date published: 13 August 2011
Mayfield begin their new season today, (Saturday 13 August), at home to Hunslet Warriors.
The warriors bring with them something of a reputation, having been thrown out of the league a few years ago and feeling the wrath of the disciplinary on several occasions since their return.
It was in fact the last game between the two clubs that proved the Leeds sides undoing, after the visiting Mayfield side got drawn into a disgraceful brawl that included players and spectators alike, but as they say that’s history and the travelling team and their supporters will, as usual, be afforded a warm Rochdale welcome as they arrive at the Mayfield sports centre today.
The Mayfield club, and coaching staff are buzzing with anticipation, with coach Butterworth particularly pleased with the level of fitness achieved by his charges under the direction of fitness coach Dave Green.
He said: “We had a good last season but expect to do better this year with the increase in fitness levels and the addition of a couple of key players we aim to finish near the top and get a good run in the play offs. I see Ieuan Higgs and Eric Johnson as being very positive signings for us and with more quality players on the way things are looking good.”
Kick off 2.30pm at the Mayfield Sports Centre.
