Mayfield to host charity match to raise money for Springhill
Date published: 16 May 2011
A charity rugby match is being held at Mayfield RL Club next Saturday (21 May) in order to raise money for Springhill Hospice.
Mayfield will be playing the Terry White Select - named after former player and coach at Mayfield, Terry White, who passed away in December 2008.
The match will start at 2pm, with an auction and disco following after the game finishes.
Terry was looked after at the hospice before his death, and his son Paul commended the work the staff put in.
“The hospice did a really good job of looking after him,” he said.
Mayfield Chairman Simon Howe agreed: “The work they do there is brilliant.”
“We are more than happy to give a bit back,” he added.
Simon also commented on how important Terry was to the club.
He said: “Over the years he played a big part in Mayfield.”
The club will also be hosting a masters tournament for over 35s on the same day.
From 1pm teams from Blackpool, Eccles, Saddleworth and Mayfield will be playing, which will include a lot of Terry’s former colleagues and ex-opponents.
There is also a chance for local enthusiasts to come down and play on the day.
Entrance to the match is £2.50, with all proceeds going towards Springhill Hospice. Tickets can be bought from the club and Mayfield Sports Centre, and can be bought on the day.
