Littleborough to play at Twickenham

Date published: 03 May 2011

Littleborough Rugby Union Football Club have made history by winning the semi-final of the RFU National Senior Vase, against Warwickshire team Newbold on Avon, to become the latest Lancashire Rugby Union Football Club to play at the home of Rugby Union, Twickenham, in the final.

The club will take on London-based Teddington RFC in the grand final on Saturday 14 May 2011 at 1.00pm.

Throughout their 80 years of Rugby, starting as ‘old boys’ from the then Rochdale Grammar School, until finally arriving at the very attractive site in the rural surroundings of Littleborough, which has been their permanent home for 40 years, their high standard of Rugby, born through years of growth in minis, junior and colts rugby, has seen the players progress into senior rugby and help to provide this championship contending first XV.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Just two per cent of all rugby players nationally get to play at the spiritual home of Rugby Union and the road to Twickenham provides no bigger moment in a player’s career than to step out on this hallowed ground; and Littleborough’s talented players fully deserve this honour.

“With a huge morale boost to the local community, Littleborough’s back room staff and local pubs/clubs are busy organising supporters coaches, accommodation and tickets for the hundreds of supporters expected to make the journey south and to make this a once in a lifetime occasion for all players and supporters of ‘Boro.”
