‘Back the bid’ events planned for World Cup

Date published: 27 April 2011

The Rochdale Rugby League World Cup 2013 Consortium has submitted, in conjunction with AGMA (Association of Greater Manchester Authorities), the Borough's bid to host a world cup fixture.

John Patterson, Rochdale MBC, has worked tirelessly on the bid and is looking forward to stage 2 of the process, where representatives from the consortium, made up of Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, Link4Life, Rochdale Hornets, Spotland Stadium Co, UK Fijian Rugby League Association and the Rochdale and District ARL, will sit down with RFL chiefs to fine tune the bid.

The Rugby League World Cup bid has already started to have a positive effect in the Borough, with numerous events planned to 'Back the Bid' and raise participation levels.

First up, on Sunday 15 May the Rochdale Town Team will take to the field at Spotland for a game against the Royal Navy, where they will be wearing a specially commissioned Fijian style strip featuring the Rugby League World Cup 2013 logo.

Saturday 28 May will see the Rochdale Fijian Association field a team in the Rochdale International Tag festival at Littleborough, where they were runners up in 2009.

Further events are planned in the lead up to announcement of who will host games in the 2013 competition, which is due in August.
