New darts league set for summer
Date published: 16 April 2011
A new summer darts league has been set up in Rochdale.
The league, named 'Just Darts’ has been set up by Mark Airey in a bid to stop players from twiddling their thumbs when the winter league finishes next month.
Mr Airey said: “I think it’s more likely to appeal to younger teams, but essentially it’s for people that just want to play darts.”
Rochdale’s winter league has been going for over 50 years, and is well known nationwide, with 30-40 teams participating.
Mr Airey is hoping that the success of the winter league will be replicated in Just Darts.
The league will target the same geographical area as the winter league, which includes Rochdale, Castleton, Middleton, Milnrow and Norden, as well as other areas.
Pubs have shown interest in the new league, as Mr Airey explained they rely heavily on the mid-week trade that pool, darts and quiz leagues bring.
He is looking for as many teams as possible, but has set a modest target for the first year.
“I’ve set a minimum of around eight teams to make the league viable, but I’m looking for over 12,” he said.
Mr Airey explained: “The league will not interfere with the winter league in any way. It will not commence until the winter league is completely finished and will finish in time for the winter league to start.
“Obviously though, teams will only be able to enter one of the summer leagues, this is an alternative.”
