Mayfield preview
Date published: 19 March 2011
After last week’s derby victory over St Anne’s, Mayfield face a trip over the Pennines to Wakefield where they face bottom club Normanton Knights.
The Yorkshire side have found the going tough this season and wins have been few and far between for them, having only notched up two victories all season.
Mayfield on the other hand are riding high sitting in third spot and enjoying a good run of form.
That said Butterworth and his players won’t be taking their opponents lightly and have been working extra hard in training to ensure there are no shocks on the day.
Two points today (Saturday 19 March 2011) would see Mayfield consolidating their top three position and make promotion back to the top flight a more realistic vision.
There will be a couple of players missing today with full back Rob Kershaw still suspended and powerful second row forward Joe Robinson getting ready for his return home to Australia.
On the positive side Mayfield welcome back Lee Atkinson returning from an eight match suspension.
The NWC side also face struggling opposition when they travel down the road to face Waterhead.
The Oldham side are second from bottom having won only two games but were unlucky to go down to Saddleworth last week in a thrilling 36 – 30 game whereas Mayfield are still buzzing after defeating local rivals Cobras in the NWC bowl competition.
Coach Ashworth said: “We have slipped down the league a bit recently but I honestly believe we are better than our position suggests we only have two games left in the league so if we want to improve that we have to do it now. Last week’s performance showed what we are capable of and we will be looking to repeat that today.”
