U14s: Orrell v Mayfield

Date published: 16 March 2011

Mayfield continued their impressive form with a hard fought win against second placed Orrell in this premiership clash.

Mayfield opened the scoring after withstanding some early pressure from the home side when Jack Higginson grubber kicked through the line for himself to score.

The visitors’ defence was solid as Orrell were met by some crunching tackles this enabled Mayfield to go in at half time winning 4-0.

At the start of the second half Mayfield were giving away possession far too easily but their defence stood firm.

In their first completed set they went the full length of the field with some impressive strong runs from the forwards.

The set finished with Higginson supporting the ball carrier to receive a short pass and dive in under the posts.

The try scorer sliced his conversion attempt wide to leave the score 8-0.

Orrell were now forcing the pass to find any possible holes in the visitors defence and on the last play they got their reward as the winger dived in at the corner after some great passing 8-4.

Mayfield's pack was tiring but some great work from the outside backs put Isaac Noi into a try scoring position which he duly accepted taking a number of defenders over the line on the way 14-4.

The home team again responded to keep the game alive and the hooker dived in from close range 14-8.

With the clock ticking down and the game in the balance Callum Ogden secured the win when his smart run out of dummy half enabled him to crash over the line.
At the final whistle the team celebrated like they had won a final this was evidence just how important this victory was to the players, they had deserved the win for their commitment, desire and attitude.

This is a very competitive division and with the season coming to a close Mayfield could finish fourth from top or face relegation depending on results.

They now have two games remaining and are the in form team in the league, winning their last three games.

Post match awards went to Man of the Match Josh Poole, Coach Award Jack Higginson and Men of steel Isaac Noi and Kevin Wetshokonda.

On Saturday prior to the game the lads were treated to a Pool tournament at a local snooker hall for their recent form.
Winners of main final Emon Ratu and Gavin Low, Plate final Joe Getting's and Daley Schofield.
