Mayfield preview
Date published: 05 March 2011
It’s over the Pennines today (Saturday 5 March 2011) for Mayfield as they seek to regain a top three spot, and with second and third placed Oulton and Ince facing each other this afternoon a win could see that aim achieved. Leeds is the destination with Stanningley Rangers the opposition.
The Leeds based club has not had the best of seasons so far and Mayfield will be looking to compound their woes after thrashing them 47- 22 at the Mayfield Sports Centre in October.
There will be strong competition for places again this week with all but Ben Butterworth reporting fit for duty, the team will be looking to improve on last weeks patchy performance in the win against Millom.
Unhappy with the way the team performed coach Sam Butterworth has put the squad through their paces going back to basics, he said: “If we get the basics right the rest will fall into place, we have some quality players in this team and they are capable of playing so much better than the last outing.
“Today we hope to get back to the form which saw us climb the table earlier in the season”.
The NWC side are also hoping to up their game as they entertain Caddishead at the Mayfield sports Centre today.
After two great performances against Hindley, both of which they lost, the lads seemed to get dragged down to the level of their opponents last week although they managed to hang on to claim the victory against Eccles.
Ashworth said: “We beat Caddishead away earlier in the season and played some great rugby in the process, since that day they have recruited well and climbed the league so they are now level on points with us in joint third position.
“With this in mind we have worked the lads hard in training this week to prepare them for the challenge posed by Caddishead today. Once more there is a full squad to select from so we will be putting out our strongest seventeen
