Mayfield preview
Date published: 26 February 2011
After the bitter disappointment of last week’s heavy defeat Mayfield will be looking to get back to winning ways today (Saturday 26 February 2011) as Cumbrian side Millom visit the Mayfield Sports Centre.
Coach Butterworth has been pleased with the response of his players, he said: “Attendance and attitude at training sessions this week has been great. It would have been easy for the players to sit back and do nothing but instead they have turned up at training eager to put right everything that went wrong last week. We’ve worked hard and concentrated on the basics, once they are right in a game, all else falls into place.
“That said Millom will be no mugs coming off the back of a narrow victory over Stanningley they will be hoping to use the situation to their advantage and start climbing the league table. They are in the bottom half at the moment but the table is tight and it won’t take much to see them gain ground on us in fourth spot. So it is up to us to get back to winning ways and that is what we are looking at this afternoon.”
Mayfield are still without Ben Butterworth, out with a bad shoulder injury and there will be a late fitness test for Simon Moore.
Also out is the suspended Lee Atkinson and the club are waiting the result of a disciplinary hearing for full back Rob Kershaw following his dismissal in the challenge cup.
In the sponsor’s box with Ace Electrical are the Weavers Arms. Match ball sponsored by Unique Sports.
Also looking to get back to winning ways are the NWC side who visit bottom club Eccles.
Mayfield have slipped down the table recently and now sit in fifth position a win today could see them pushing for a top three place which is where they want to be.
Coach Ashworth commented: “We have had a tough run lately losing players to the first team, to injury and work commitments and not least to overseas deployment for three of our lads who are serving their country, but we’re not complaining, the lads who are here are putting in 100 per cent in both training and on the pitch. Its testament to these lads that we are still turning out a good well prepared side every week.
“This week will be no different after going down last week at Hindley we want to show what we are capable of and if we put in the same effort there’s no reason we can’t over turn Eccles on their own ground. We are waiting fitness reports on a couple of players namely, Hancock Leach and Howard who picked up knocks last week so the team won’t be named until Saturday.”
