Hopwood Community Primary School’s football team will represent Rochdale AFC in the regional finals of the nPower ‘Kids Cup.’
The school won their place at the regional’s when they beat Meanwood Primary School 2-0 in a 5-a-side competition played at Spotland stadium on Saturday (12 February 2011).
The schools went head to head at the half time break of Rochdale’s game against Sheffield Wednesday.
Dale's Liam Dickinson presented the winning trophy to Hopwood Primary and the runners up trophy to Meanwood Primary.
Hopwood Primary will now represent Rochdale AFC at the regional finals at Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday 23 March to determine the northern representative.
If successful they will then be competing in the national finals to play before the League One play off final at Old Trafford in May.
Keith Hicks from Rochdale Football Club, said: “It was great to see school children competing in the final of the nPower Kids Cup during half time of the Rochdale versus Sheffield Wednesday match and as it is a national competition run by the Football League it was fitting that the final should be played in front of so many spectators.
“The players had a fantastic time at Spotland with the only disappointment being there had to be loser on the day.”
A spokesperson for Hopwood Community Primary School, said: “We are all so proud of the boys who were an absolute credit to the school.
“Many thanks to the parents and staff who supported the boys on the day.”
A spokesperson for Meanwood Primary School, said: “The children had won a lot of matches to get that far. We are incredibly proud of the boys they played really well.
"Obviously the boys were disappointed that they didn’t win but Hopwood were the best team on the day.”
