Rochdale Online Alliance League round-up

Date published: 02 February 2011

In the absence of much action last weekend due to Jack Frost’s unwelcome and untimely return interest turned to the draws made at the Clubs’ Meeting for the last eight of the President’s Cup and the Alletson and Mitchell Memorial Trophy.

In the President’s Cup the tie of the round is undoubtedly unbeaten league leaders Castleton against Weavers following the latter’s 6-2 extra time victory over Syke at Matthew Moss 3G last Saturday.

An unlikely scenario maybe but Rochdale Asia could conceivably face their own second team in the first tie drawn whilst the remaining two ties are hard to call whoever progresses from the delayed matches.

The tie of the round in the Alletson and Mitchell Memorial Trophy sees promotion chasing Syke 2nds face one of last season’s promoted teams, Castleton 2nds or Whitworth Valley 2nds, at Firgrove, while Wardle 2nds reward for a hard fought 1-0 win at Sudden Carling 2nds is a trip to the last round’s shock winners Woodbank.

The focus adjusts to league action once again this weekend and Castleton will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Concept Filter Products Premier Division with a home game against Fothergill & Whittles. Wardle, fresh from a 2-1 home victory over Asia in the only league game to survive the freeze last Saturday, lead the chasing pack, who are all in action though their pursuit appears increasingly futile.

In the Matterson Cranes Division 1 Jacks House are firm title favourites but need to get their games in hand played and won, starting with Waggon Athletic at Walsden Rec this weekend, while Whitworth Valley 2nds are looking to capitalise on any slip up by leaders Weavers 2nds.

The Matthew Montgomery and Co Division 2 title race is easily the most compelling as any one of the top seven teams could quite easily triumph come May and Sun Hotel against Jacks House 2nds appears to be Saturday’s game to watch though Balderstone will surely be tested at resurgent leaders Fothergill and Whittles 2nds.
