England women lend a hand in Rochdale
Date published: 06 December 2010
Two of the top female players Rugby League in England have visited Matthew Moss High School.
Clare Robinson and Isobel Pickering got involved in a session that introduced Rugby League to the 25 year 8 and 9 girls who recently took part and won the Bolton, Bury and Rochdale Competition Manager Tag Festival.
The session, organised by Danny Pyke, Rochdale Community Rugby League Coach, introduced the basic skills to the girls and gave them the confidence to carry on being involved playing Rugby League.
Mr Pyke said: “The session went well and the girls seemed to really enjoy it and by the end they were picking up the skills fast and transferring them into game situations”
“Clare and Izzy being there gave the girls a look at what could maybe be achieved if they enjoy the game and pick up on the skills being taught”
Obviously, Rugby wasn’t for everyone involved in the session in but it was good to see everyone getting involved in the session and enjoying learning basic transferable team plays and key skills.
Following on from the session the school and the pupils have asked for the sessions to carry on after school with the aim to start at Tag Rugby team and maybe entering Carnegie Champion Schools competitions.
