Rochdale Hornets have applied to host the crucial 2013 World Cup group clash between Fiji and Ireland.
The Rugby Football League have asked for tenders from towns and cities in England and Wales to act as hosts for the 19 matches and Rochdale believe Spotland would be an appropriate choice for the clash between the Fijiians and the Irish.
"Given the historical links between Hornets and Fijian rugby league players, it seems to us that it's a natural fit that we should host a game featuring the South Sea Islanders," said a Rochdale spokesperson.
"We have a stadium worthy of hosting a World Cup clash and there is a sizeable Fijian community in and around Rochdale, as there is an Irish community.
"There is a greater chance of an ongoing legacy if Rochdale is awarded the game."
Ireland lost to Fiji in the semi-final eliminator at the last World Cup in 2008 and their 2013 meeting is almost certain to determine which team goes through to the last eight from Group A along with England and Australia.
