Rochdale Mayfield took the longest journey of their regular Hattons Solicitors National Conference League Division 1 campaign on Saturday (30 October 2010) – and showed no ill effects from the travelling as they blew Cumbrian side Millom away in the opening 20 minutes to record their third victory in a row.
Millom, who have performed well so far this season, traditionally build their seasons on strong home form and combined with the heavy conditions and long journey, this could have been a tricky day for Mayfield, but despite resting player coach Sam Butterworth, Mayfield played controlled Rugby and spread the ball wide at the right time to find flying winger Ben Namulnatua in great form as he scored two early tries.
Further tries by opposite winger Kristian Duffy, Aiden Gleeson, Todd O’Brien and Simon Moore followed in the Mayfield dominated first half and Wayne Corcoran added three conversions to give the Rochdale team a 30-0 lead at the break.
The conditions played their part in a heavier battle in the second half, but undeterred, Ben Namulnatua added two further touchdowns, for a four try haul, a Todd O’Brien who controlled the game from hooker scored another. Wayne Corcoran added two more conversions. Millom managed a consolation try and conversion but it was just that, as the in form Mayfield team were good value for their 40 point victory that sees them move up to 6th place in the league table.
The journey home seemed much shorter – and wetter, and Mayfield now prepare for the visit of Castleford Panthers this Saturday (6 November 2010) at the Mayfield Sports Centre, 2.30pm KO.
Team; Robert Kershaw, Ben Namulnatua, Steve Wood, Joe Robinson, Kristian Duffy, Wayne Corcoran, Ben Butterworth, Benn Coombes, Todd O’Brien, Chris Brett, Andrew Moroney, Matty Moores, Aiden Gleeson. Sam Butterworth, Simon Moore, Paul Hancock, Dave Ellis.
