Triumph for Mayfield seconds
Date published: 25 October 2010
Mayfield NWC entertained near neighbours Waterhead at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday (23 October 2010), and the home side were looking for a solid performance after last weeks comprehensive win over Thatto Heath halted the slide of two defeats on the bounce.
Waterhead included a sprinkling of first team players, including ex - Mayfield centre Craig Highton, and it was Highton who took the initiative for the visitors as Mayfield started poorly and allowed Waterhead to race to a 12 point lead in as many minutes.
Mayfield woke up and managed to slow the scoring rate down, but still found themselves 24 nil down at half time.
The second half Mayfield team seemed like a completely different one as they began to finish sets and work for each other. Belief in an amazing comeback grew as the home side steadily pegged back the scoreline to 24-24.
Minutes remaining and up stepped Mayfield's halfback John Marsland. Marsland was celebrating his 21st birthday but it was he who was giving out the presents - to his team mates and coaches - as he cooly slotted over a drop goal to take the lead.
Waterhead hastily fought their way back up the field and had an attempt at a field goal themselves - but the referee waved away the effort and Mayfield triumphed with a score line that seemed unlikely at half time.
