Mayfield preview
Date published: 11 September 2010
After last week’s poor start to the campaign Mayfield travel to Hull today (Saturday 11 September 2010) where they face newly promoted Myton Warriors.
Myton started their assault on the division with an impressive win away from home at Stannigley Rangers, 28 – 12, so this is going to be a severe test for the Rochdale lads, who will be looking to up their game.
Coach Butterworth was not too downbeat after last week’s home defeat and is hopeful the team can turn it round and play the rugby everyone knows they are capable of: “The response to last week’s result has been positive we could have sulked all week and let our heads go down but we are not that sort of side we only know one way and that is to work hard and put right what went wrong.
“There were plenty of positives to take us forward not least the performances of O’Brien, Simpson Maroney in fact the whole pack who for long spells dominated their opposite numbers. A bit more composure and better ball retention will go a long way to see us winning this game.”
The A team play their first home game of the season today when they entertain Leigh central at the Mayfield Sports Centre. In a tough hard fought encounter last week the NWC side beat a good Bamber Bridge side on their own meadow so confidence is running high.
Leigh lost out to Hindley on the same day so are looking to open their account for the season against Mayfield. “The lads were awesome last week” said coach Ashworth, “They worked hard for the full eighty minutes and never took a backward step or shirked a tackle.
“Bamber Bridge had more possession than we did thanks to our own unforced errors but to a man we dominated them in defence they must have been sick of our defensive wall lead by Biggins and Hancock. With the same application today coupled with an improvement in attacking ideas we should be too strong for our opponents.”
