Barnet 1 (Jarrett 90) Rochdale 0
Date published: 08 May 2010
Rochdale's final game in League Two ended in defeat as the promotion winners went down by a late Albert Jarrett goal to nil. Barnet's goal ensured their league status for another season, although with Grimsby going down 3-0 at Burton, the Bees' win was immaterial.
The home side started well in their quest to stay in the league and Frank Fielding made a fine early save at his near post as Joe Devera's cross fell to John O'Flynn, the striker hitting the ball well but Fielding remained strong. Rochdale responded with a chance of their own but Chris O'Grady fired well over the top after latching onto Marcus Holness's low centre.
Devera was enterprising in his forays down the Barnet right and he created another opportunity as a nice interchange between him and Mauro Vilhete allowed the latter to find O'Flynn in the box. He laid the ball off for Mark Hughes on the edge to fire into Fielding's midriff.
Shots continued to rain in on Fielding's goal but most were from distance and straight at the Dale keeper. The visitors were unable to relieve the pressure as they could not keep hold of the ball for more than two or three passes. They came more into the game towards the end of the half but Jake Cole remained a virtual spectator.
Fielding was the far busier of the two keepers and he produced a fine save from Albert Adomah to keep the scores level, the winger having skipped in from the left and unleashed a right foot drive from the edge of the box.
Next it was the turn of the woodwork to come to Dale's rescue as Ed Upson's back post header hit the crossbar. Rory McArdle was on hand to hack clear.
The final chance of the opening period came to the visitors as Jason Kennedy burst from midfield and unleashed a volley from the edge of the box that Cole turned behind; the keeper's first and only action of the half.
It was more of the same in the second half as Barnet continued to dominate the chances. Devera drilled into the arms of Fielding and then the Dale keeper somehow kept the scores level again minutes later. O'Flynn latched onto Gary Breen's ball over the top and rounded the keeper but Fielding got back to block the finish.
It just would not go in for the home side. When Upson found space from a half cleared corner to rifle towards goal it looked certain to give Barnet the lead but Kallum Higginbotham blocked on the line.
The home side were anxious for a goal but their nerves were calmed when news came through from Burton midway through the second half that Grimsby had gone three goals behind. It seemed certain that the Bees would be spared relegation no matter what the score at Underhill.
The home side continued to push for a winner and a late attack brought them the goal that for the most part they had deserved. Adomah broke down the right, fed the ball in for Paul Furlong, who laid it into the path of Albert Jarrett. The shot took a cruel deflection, wrong footing Fielding and finding the net.
