Annual mini-rugby competition - a great day

The Rochdale Rugby Union Football club’s annual mini-rugby competition took place on Sunday 26 April 2010. All the teams declared it a ‘great day’.

The tournament consisted of a series of games for age groups from 7 to 12 years old with teams taking part from across the north-west.

Chairman of the Rochdale Minis and Juniors, Tommy Owens said: “It is really pleasing to see at Rochdale hundreds of children every year, whatever the weather, expending large amounts of energy while learning the pleasures of our wonderful game and being part of a sporting team, whether winning or losing.

“Due to the success of many previous tournaments we have opened up the number of teams entering this year.”

Mr Ownes added: “Rugby has given me and continues to give me so much pleasure personally, not only as a player but as a coach over my many years at Rochdale.” 

The results were:

Under 7's:
Winners: Warrington and Lymm, (who will share the trophy for six months)

Under 8's:
Winners: Warrington
Runners up: Widnes

Under 9's:
Winners: York
Runners up : Broughton Park

Under 10's:
Winners: York
Runners up: Littleborough

Under 11's:
Winners: York
Runners up: Widnes.

Under 12's:
Winners: Trafford M.V.
Runners up: Broughton Park.

Aggregate Trophy Winner Lymm.

Valery Blackburn, fixtures secretary for Rochdale Minis said: “A good day was had by all.”

There was one accident which resulted in one child being air lifted to hospital.

The accident happened in the afternoon of the day long tournament when the player had to be airlifted to hospital with a neck injury. It is believed the player who was playing for Tarleton Rugby Club under 10s has two fractured vertebrae. He was discharged from hospital on Tuesday.
