Chilli Express Indoor Cricket Cup 2010

Stoney Stars won the first Chilli Express Indoor Cricket Cup at Springhill Sports Centre, organised by Rochdale Sports and Cultural Links on 7 and 21 March 2010.

Councillor Mohammed Sharif (Portfolio Holder for Regeneration) opened the cup competition. He was introduced to all the players taking part in the competition and was pleased to see so many young people are taking part and praised the organisers of the cup competition and Indoor Cricket league for devoting their time and efforts in organising these competitions for young people and adults.

Chilli Express Indoor Cricket Cup was sponsored by Mr Toffiique Malik, proprietor of Chilli Express fast food bar. Mr Malik is a very keen cricketer himself and played at Rochdale Cricket Club for several years.

Six teams took part in the competition and they were divided into two groups:

Group A 
Baba XI 
RYCC 
Stoney Stars

Group B
Max XI 
Rochdalians 
Unique

Five matches were played on Sunday 7 March. The first match of the day was RYCC against Stoney Stars. RYCC won the toss and elected to bat. In an excellent start from RYCC they scored 151 in their allocated overs (which would turn out to be the highest total of the day). A very good partnership was formed between Iqbal with 34 runs (not out) and Qaiser with 33 runs (not out). There was a good response from Stoney Stars as a good batting display from Shakeel with 26 runs, Wasim with 33 runs (not out) and Shakir with 16 runs (not out) helped them to win the match with 1 over to spare.

The second match of the day was between Stoney Stars and Baba XI. Stoney Stars batted first and made 96 runs in their 8 overs. A good start from Baba XI as Iftikhar with 30 runs (not out) and Shakeel with 23 runs (not out) set up a nail biting finish. Baba XI needed 3 runs to win on the last ball and they managed to score 4 runs and win the match.

The third match of the day was between Max XI and Unique. Max XI won the toss and elected to bat and they managed to score 103 runs in their 8 overs as Sultan scored 30 runs (not out), Shoaib scored 27 runs (not out) and Rahman scored 16 runs. Unique's top scorers were Noman with 25 runs (not out) and Amjad with 18 runs. Max XI were unable to control extras and Unique won the match with 4 wickets and 2 overs to spare.

The next match was between Unique and Rochdalians. Unique won the toss and elected to bat and scored 109 runs. There was good batting from Asif with 30 runs (not out) and Fareed with 30 runs (not out). Rochdalians responded strongly as Faisal scored 22 runs, Asif 23 runs and Hameed 19 runs. Rochdalians won the match by 3 wickets with 1 ball to spare.

The final match of the day was between Rochdalians and Max XI. Rochdalians batted first and socred 111 runs. Malik scored 23 runs and Atif 15 runs (not out). Max XI’s openers Sultan and Rashid scored 27 runs and 14 runs respectively but none of the other batsmen contributed much towards the total and Max XI lost the match by 25 runs.

The second round of the cup was played on Sunday 21 March. The first match of the day, between RYCC and Baba XI was must win game for both teams in order to qualify for the semi finals. RYCC batted first and scored 115 run with a good batting display from Iqbal with 32 runs (not out), Irfan with 28 runs (not out) and Quyyom with 19 runs. In response Baba XI could only score 73 runs and lost the match by 42 runs.

From Group A Stoney Stars and RYCC and from Group B Unique and Rochdalians qualified for the semi finals.

First semi final of the day was between Stoney Stars and Unique. Stoney Stars batted first and scored 120 runs. Excellent batting from Shakir with 30 runs (not out) and Shakeel with 23 runs (not out). Unique could not respond and they lost the match by 53 runs. Their highest scorers were Fareed with 19 runs and Munawar with 10 runs.

The second semi final was between Rochdalians and RYCC. Rochdalians batted first and scored 86 runs with good batting from Asif scroing 35 runs (not out) and Hameed scoring 15 runs. An excellent batting display from RYCC batsmen meant they won the match very comfortably with 4 wickets and 2 balls to spare.

The final of the Cup was between RYCC and Stoney Stars. RYCC won the toss and elected to bat. RYCC managed a total of 86 runs in their 8 overs with good batting from Irfan scoring 26 runs, Kunain 15 runs and Iqbal 10 runs. Stoney Stars responded badly and lost both of their opening batsmen in the first over. However, Khan scored 32 runs (not out), Shakir 13 runs and Haji 10 runs to help win the match for Stoney Stars and the Chilli Express Indoor Cricket Cup 2010.
