Sacred Heart FC raise £3000 for Springhill Hospice

Date published: 04 April 2010

Rolling back the years at Fox Park, the home of Rochdale Sacred Heart FC, some of the undefeated team of 10 years ago played a selection of the current squad, raising an astonishing £3000 for Springhill Hospice.

The game was played in a competitive spirit, with the younger legs storming into a 2-0 lead, before the old timers got used to playing together again and levelled the game.

It was a very entertaining spectacle for all the spectators, with the old boys leading 4-3 and tiring rapidly, there was only five minutes of the game remaining, when the younger legs made it count and equalised.

At the final whistle with the score 4-4 the game went to penalties. Both teams couldn't find a winner and a diplomatic draw was settled upon.

A spokesman for the club said: "All the committee at Rochdale Sacred Heart would like to thank everyone who made the the day so enjoyable and for those who sponsored the players and provided the welcome refreshments after the game, which has helped raise over £3,000 for Springhill Hospice."

Ian Jenkins, Fundraising Manager at Springhill Hospice, said: "It was a bitterly cold morning when the match was played but that didn't dampen spirit in which it was played - the banter between the players was hilarious! On behalf of everybody at Springhill Hospice may I take this opportunity to publicly thank Mick and the rest of the lads - both in the backroom and on the pitch - for their wonderful support."
