Idara Allstars win Sports For All 2009/2010 indoor community cricket tournament
Date published: 04 January 2010
Rochdale’s Sports For All organised a cricket tournament at Matthew Moss indoor sports arena over Christmas and New Year.
The competition culminated with the final yesterday (Sunday 3 January), with Idara Allstars, a team of young men from Milkstone and Deeplish, defeating Bilal Legends, who come from Wardleworth.
Asad, the player-manager of Idara Allstars, said: “In the past few years we have consistently been well-placed in the tournament. We are now the only team in the last seven years to have won this trophy twice, so I am delighted for the team.”
Hanief Mohammed of Sports For All, who organised the tournament, said: “Idara All Stars played really well. Asad organised the team in a good way - playing youngsters for the group matches and then using the senior, more experienced team players for the finals.
"This is the seventh year we have run this tournament and it remains as competitive as ever. We would like to thank Matthew Moss Sports staff and Councillor Mohammed Sharif, who have been supportive in ensuring the event was a success.”
Councillor Sharif, the Council cabinet member for regeneration, was on hand to give his support and said: “A number of teams entered this tournament and to see young people from different communities travel from various towns and neighborhoods, in poor weather conditions, to take part in this sort of initiative, shows the level of enthusiasm that exists for sport amongst our young people, and how it can be used as a vehicle to promote new beginnings and developments.”
The Fair Play award went to Halifax Tigers for their sportsmanship and objectivity.
The teams will receive their awards at the 10th Sports For All Annual Awards evening, to be held in February.
