Rugby League legend and Hornets RL conditioner/assistant Des Drummond has flown out with the other members of the UK based players of the Jamaican Rugby League Team to Jacksonville Florida, where they have met up with the other half of the team which is drawn from the Jamaican domestic competition.
The Jamaicans are flying to Florida to take part in The Hotels of Jacksonville.com Rugby League Atlantic Cup, which will see them take on the USA National team the Tomahawks.
Des said: "I’m incredibly proud to be part of the Jamaican set up, and I’m looking forward to meeting up with the lads who play their Rugby League in Jamaica."
Des is also casting a watchful eye over some of the UK based players who aren't attached to professional clubs, as potential signings for the Hornets.
Des went on to say: "There is a lot of untapped talent within the Jamaican community which if nurtured and trained correctly could produce a host of players for a club like Hornets."
The game itself takes place at the Hodges Stadium at the University of North Florida, home of the Jacksonville Axemen Rugby League Club.
Hodges Stadium is no stranger to hosting International Rugby League events, as in 2008 it staged the International Challenge match between the Russell Crowe owned South Sydney Rugby League Club and Engage Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos in front of a capacity crowd.
Hornets Chairman Mark Wynn said: "We are really happy for Des, he is a legend in the game and its great he is able to help spread the gospel of Rugby League across the Atlantic, impart his immense knowledge of the game to young up and coming players and fingers crossed recruit a few new signings for Hornets along the way! Des was concerned with the trip that he would have to miss the first week of training but I’ve told him the club supports him 100% in his international role and I’m sure the Hornets lads will look forward to his return, though they may change their mind once he puts them through their paces!"
Mike Banks, Hornets CEO added: “It is fantastic that Des and the Jamaican squad are able to promote the game overseas. Having such a great ambassador for rugby league and in particular for Hornets Rugby league club is tremendous. The club is fully supportive of Des in this role and we wish him and all the team success both on and off the pitch."
