Heart go down to late penalty

Date published: 24 September 2009

Rochdale Sacred Heart were denied a point in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League premier division.

Paul Stevenson’s 90th-minute penalty for Springhead clinched a 2-1 win.

Heart will count themselves unfortunate to come away with nothing after an entertaining encounter.

The visitors outfit started brightly, with Richard Bennett and Stevenson denied by excellent saves.

But Heart took command in the second half and their pressure paid off when they nosed ahead.

The goal sparked Springhead into life and they drew level with 15 minutes to go, Ryan Shaughnessy doing brilliantly to set up Steve Harrison for a fine finish.

The game was in the balance until, with only seconds remaining, Bennett was brought down and Stevenson held his nerve to despatch the spot-kick.
