Rotherham back referee over pitch decision

Date published: 25 August 2009

Rotherham have responded to Rochdale's complaints about the state of the Don Valley Stadium pitch.

The pitch hosted a U2 concert days before Dale's defeat to the Millers.

Keith Hill said that the pitch was unsafe and that the game should never have gone ahead but the Millers have hit back with a statement backing the referee's decision to play the fixture as planned.

"The pitch was deemed playable by the referee and he was happy for the game to go-ahead," the statement reads.

"Following the U2 concert our Ground staff in conjunction with Don Valley Stadium worked around the clock to ensure that the playing surface was in an acceptable condition to play on. After the referee looked at the surface he was happy for the game to take place."
