Heavy defeat for Rochdale Town
Date published: 17 August 2009
Having battled to a hard earned draw with Oldham in midweek, Rochdale Town were back to losing ways at the weekend with a heavy defeat at the hands of Wigan Robin Park.
Town went into the game full of confidence from the last minute equaliser at Oldham and they took that inspiration into the opening minutes at Wigan, taking the lead through Steve McCann.
From there things went dramatically down hill for the visitors as Wigan found Town's net at will. Their lead lasted just four minutes as James Dean equalised and further strikes from Dean Calloway, Chris McNally and Steven Williams had Wigan 4-1 up at half time.
Four soon became five after the break as McNally struck his second.
Danny Taylor pulled one back for Town but the four goal advantage was soon restored through Williams, and the striker completed his hat-trick on 70 minutes to make it 7-2.
Liam Ratcliffe hit a final consolation for Town.
Next up for Town is a visit to Daisy Hill Park next Saturday (22 August).
