Scott Wiseman may not have recovered from illness in time for the Aldershot game.
Rochdale manager Keith Hill has dipped into the loan market to make an emergency signing ahead of Dale's first home game of the season against Aldershot on Saturday.
Defender Matt Flynn joins Rochdale for a month from Macclesfield Town.
With Hill sweating on the fitness of Scott Wiseman and Marcus Holness, Dale were desperate for defensive cover. If Wiseman fails to recover from the bout of food poisoning that kept him out of the midweek game at Sheffield Wednesday, Flynn could come straight into the Dale starting line-up.
The 20-year old played 28 times for Macclesfield last season after emerging from their youth ranks in 2007.
Holness limped out of Tuesday's Carling Cup defeat, leaving youngster Josh Brizell to make his professional football debut. Brizell was joined on the bench by two youth team colleagues and Dale assistant boss Dave Flitcroft, such is the lack of numbers in Hill's injury hit squad.
