Dale fans cause thousands worth of damage at Macclesfield

Date published: 17 February 2009

So-called Rochdale supporters left a trail of destruction in the away end at Macclesfield on Saturday, leaving the home side with a £2000 repair bill.

The club has moved to distance itself from a group of fans that smashed up the male toilets during Dale's 1-0 win over the Cheshire side.

Chief Executive Colin Garlick was 'embarrassed' at the antics of the individuals concerned. "I was approached at the end of the game on Saturday by Macclesfield officials about the incident and wanting to send me an invoice, quite frankly it left me feeling very embarrassed," he said.

"Rochdale supporters in general are a very friendly bunch with a good reputation throughout the league and this is being spoiled by mindless individuals.

"We had 895 supporters at Moss rose on Saturday and the vast majority went along to cheer their team to victory. Unfortunately instead of celebrating a win and our league position we find ourselves talking about incidents like this."

"It is clear from the telephone calls and emails that I have received that many genuine Dale Supporters are, like ourselves concerned about this small minority of so called supporters who are not only damaging our reputation but who are also spoiling the away day experience for true Dale fans."

One Rochdale supporter has offered to identify those involved and all information will be passed on to Macclesfield officials and the police.

The club are appealing to any other fans that witnessed the incident to assist them in identifying the culprits.

13 people have been banned from Spotland this season and Mr Garlick said: "We will also be looking to extend the cooperation between clubs and police forces to try and ensure that this type of person is not welcome at any of our matches.

"The club and the vast majority of our supporters don't want people like this connected to the club and we will be doing everything we can to rid ourselves of undesirables."
