Rochdale diabetic boxer Muhammad Ali secures victory in dominant performance

Date published: 23 November 2024

Rochdale’s Muhammad Ali has added another victory to his growing list of achievements in the boxing ring. Over the weekend, Ali triumphed against Josh Cook in a decisive match, winning every round to claim a 60-54 points victory.

Reflecting on the bout, Ali said he took control from the outset. “I was on the front foot pushing the pace of the fight. Josh Cook was very defensive and not wanting to get involved in the battle,” he said.

Ali expressed gratitude to those who have supported him throughout his journey. He said: “I want to thank everyone who came out to support me. I want to say a massive thank you to my new sponsors, Care Solutions and Expert Electrical, who are helping me with the costs of my boxing. Without these types of people supporting me, my journey is not possible."

Looking ahead, Ali has ambitious plans for the future, with the support of his coach Humphrey Harrison and manager Pat Barratt. He added: “In 2025, I will create history by becoming the first type one diabetic to become a boxing champion. I’m disciplined and focused on a big year ahead."

Ali is determined to inspire others through his achievements. “I want to show the world that goals are achievable if you surround yourself with good people. In the word ‘impossible,’ there is ‘possible.’ I’d love the support of everyone in my town, Rochdale.

This is to show everyone what a town we have, full of positive people."

Ali made history in September 2018 when he became the first UK boxer with type one diabetes to fight professionally, following a three-year battle with the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC). He now aspires to become the first diabetic boxing champion.

Ali trains at Oliver’s Gym in Salford under the guidance of coach Humphrey Harrison.
