Defying diabetes: Muhammad Ali's road to boxing glory

Date published: 28 July 2024

A 30-year-old boxer from Rochdale has clinched a stunning victory, overcoming both his opponent and the hurdles of type one diabetes. Despite once being refused a boxing licence due to his illness, Muhammad Ali was victorious at the Black Flash Promotions' 'Fight for Glory' event, where he defeated John Henry Masqoora, a seasoned Colombian fighter, with a decisive 60-54 points win.

After a 14-month break, Ali showcased resilience and skill, dominating all rounds. This win is even more remarkable given his battle with diabetes since the age of four. Ali fought back legally and medically, securing his licence in May 2018.

Ali thanked his team, including head coach Humphrey Harrison, coach Tomas at Oliver’s Gym, and strength and conditioning coach Dr. Neil Fell. "With their support, I believe I will become a champion," he said.

Ali will compete in Liverpool in early September, aiming to build on his success. He aspires to be the first type one diabetic boxing champion, inspiring others to chase their dreams. Ali emphasises the life skills gained through sports, such as discipline, punctuality, hygiene, and respect.

His journey and recent triumph underscore his unyielding perseverance and the potential for greatness despite significant challenges. Ali remains an inspiration for aspiring athletes worldwide as he continues his quest for boxing glory.

Muhammed told Rochdale Online News: “My goals are to create history in the near future becoming the first type 1 diabetic boxing champion.

“I want to show the world never give up on your dreams. Anything is achievable in life if you have the right people around you.

He added: “People should take part in sports where you learn so many life skills such as making new friends, being disciplined, punctuality, hygiene, respecting your coaches/teachers, respecting teammates and fans, and many more.

“With the support of my head coach Humphery Harrison and coach Tomas at Oliver’s gym and my strength and conditioning coach Dr Neil Fell at OnePT in Rochdale I believe I will become a champion.”
