Rochdale AFC makes first summer signing

Rochdale AFC has signed winger Connor McBride on a two-year-deal following the expiration of his contract at Gateshead.

McBride is a former Celtic youngster who joined Gateshead last summer, making over 30 appearances last season when the club finished sixth in the National League table and won the FA Trophy.

The 23-year-old said: “First and foremost, Rochdale is a massive club. They were in the league only a couple of years ago and have a good fanbase. Most importantly, the manager is the reason I joined.

“The way he sees the game is similar to how I see it. The style of play suits me and I can’t wait to work for him. It made it an easy decision for me to come. He wants to get the ball down and play, which suits me, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Born in Falkirk, Scotland, McBride spent a period with his hometown club before joining giants Celtic, where he spent time as part of their Under-20 squad.

After a loan spell at Stenhousemuir, he joined Blackburn Rovers on a permanent deal in the summer of 2020, featuring regularly for their Under-21 side.

He was part of the Queens Park side that won promotion to the Scottish Championship whilst on loan in 21/22, before signing for Raith Rovers in the same division.

Following 24 appearances for Rovers, he signed for Gateshead last summer, making 31 appearances in all competitions as they achieved a top-six finish and won the FA Trophy.
