Teams sought for charity football tournament

Date published: 29 September 2008

Organisers of a charity football tournament are looking to get more teams to take part so that they can raise money to buy clothes and food for people in Palestine.

The open age 5-a-side tournament takes place this Saturday (4 October) at Soccer Village in Milnrow. The cost of entering a team, which consists of five starting players and two substitutes, is £35 and all of the money raised will go direct to underprivelged families in the troubled nation.

Event organiser Waqar Khan, brother of Central Rochdale Councillor Ibrar, said: "We're hoping to raise as much money as we can for the people of Palestine. A lot of people over there are celebrating a Holy month and at this time especially they deserve money for clothing and food. Hopefully we will get a lot of teams to support this worthy cause."

The tournament has been supported by Rochdale's Parliamentary Candidate Simon Danczuk. He said: “It’s excellent that these guys are raising money for Palestine, the situation there is very desperate for many of the people. The conditions in which many Palestinians have to live are awful and its great that people in our town are doing what they can to help. I hope the tournament goes well, I will certainly be there cheering on the teams.”

The games take place between 11am and 2pm. To enter a team, contact Waqar Khan on 07845 767878.
