Former Mayfield player signs for Super League team

Date published: 17 August 2019

Former Rochdale Mayfield player Matty Ashton has this week signed for Super League team Warrington Wolves.

He will see out this season with Swinton before joining his new team in time for the 2020 season.

Matty played junior rugby at Mayfield under the tutelage of Dean Hartley and Marvin Connolly up to under 16 level. He was trained by Matt Calland (now Rochdale Hornets head coach) at under 18s level before making his debut in the Mayfield open age side.

After two seasons with the Mayfield NCL side, Matty decided to try his luck in Australia and had a successful season with the Mullumbimby Giants team in New South Wales before returning to the UK to sign for Swinton at the beginning of this year’s season.

Matty, aged 21, is currently the top try scorer in the Championship with 23 tries in 22 games; a phenomenal achievement by anybody’s standards, but more remarkable considering this is his first season at this level.

Matty’s move to Warrington will mean that three former Mayfield players will be playing in the Super League next season with Jack Ashworth and Matty Lees plying their trade with current Super League leaders St Helens.

A representative for Mayfield said: “Everyone at Mayfield would like to pass on their congratulations to Matty.

“We would also like to wish Jack Ashworth and Matty Lees the best of luck as they prepare to take on Warrington in the Coral Challenge Cup final at Wembley on Saturday 24 August.”
