Autograss: New cars, new drivers, action-packed racing

Date published: 24 April 2019

The first meeting of the Autograss season got underway on Sunday 21 April. In glorious sunshine on a track in tip top condition, the first meeting was held at Leewood Autograss.

Although there were new cars and new drivers, the same reliable fast action-packed racing was enjoyed by spectators.

It was round one of four qualifiers for the National Championship to be run as usual in August and it was busy, with 150 drivers registered to race on the day.

Steve Hayward from Leewood Motor Club said: “Leewood drivers recorded some wins bagging lots of points namely Jack Gibbons, Dave Mansfield, Marc Shepherd, Zoe Leyland, and Vinny Gibbons.

“This year all our meetings are open to any driver and we had visitors from Scotland, Nottingham, Yorkshire and Shropshire etc.

“It was a fantastic days racing enjoyed by everyone, roll on 5 May for round three.

“In between on the 28 April round two is on the North Wales track 10.30 start.”

Autograss is a non-contact motorsport that takes place on an oval (approximately 400 metre) track using a natural soil surface.

Leewood Motor Club was founded in the 1970's and was a amalgamation of Lancs & Cheshire Autograss and Leesona-Holt rally club.

Steve Hayward, Leewood Motor Club said: “We are a family friendly motor club and the only Autograss club in the Manchester area. If you are interested in joining us as a racer or a social member come along to our monthly meeting at the White Lion in Heywood (OL10 4NS). These are normally held on the first Monday of the month."
