Wardleworth FC help orphans through charity match

Date published: 08 August 2008

Last night (Thursday 7 August) saw a momentous occasion for amateur football side, Wardleworth FC players past and present faced each other to raise funds for charity.

All the players made a donation to 'Muslim Hands', an organisation that helps orphans around the world.

The Wardleworth 'Legends' squad was made up of more than 20 former players, who travelled from far afield to join in the event, and they had chance to see how far the club has developed since they last donned the Wardleworth shirt.

More than 200 spectators lined the pitch as the teams took to the field.

Tackles through in thick and fast in a fesity opening quarter and the 'legends' soon let the current Wardleworth side know they were in for a game when Unis Musa scored with a superb free-kick from twenty yards out.

Not to be outdone the current Wardleworth side scored with a set piece of their own. Azmat Khan bending his shot round the wall to bring the equaliser.

The tempo did not let up in the second half and the 'Legends' rotated their side to keep the legs fresh. The changes worked as Namaan fired an unstoppable volley past a static Wardleworth keeper.

Again the Wardleworth team fired themselves up and rallied once more. Stern defending from the legends kept them at bay but finally they folded under the pressure, Asif Khan converting from short range after the goalkeeper couldn't hold on to a shot. The final whistle followed soon after.

The match was sponsored by Whitestone Solicitors who have named the annual event the 'Nissa Charity Match' in respect of a colleague and friend’s mother who passed away earlier this year.

Almas Khan, Vice Chairman for Wardleworth FC, said after the game: “The event was unbelievable and the response was immense. We wouldn’t have dreamed we could get The Legends team to all show for this event but it truly shows the commitment and genuine desire that all these lads have in helping a worthy cause.

"The crowd was fantastic and was a real community event with young and old all enjoying the match. We hope that we can hold numerous charity events to help children and families all around the world who are not as lucky as we may be. We hope to raise awareness and with Wardleworth FC we believe we have a great bunch of people who are willing to go the extra mile in making superb events like this come true."
