Rugby League: Great Britain Police RL 10 - 40 England Students RL

Date published: 23 April 2018

The GB Police Rugby League team played in the President's Cup competition against England Students RL team at Mayfield ARLFC on Wednesday 18 April.

Local players Lewis Ainley at scrum half and Ben Marsden at loose forward were both prominent as the police team worked hard to maintain the pressure on the England Student Team.

Tries from Motum and Southwell and a conversion from Lewis Ainley were the first half rewards for some good rugby from GB Police team but tries and conversions from the England Students gave them a half time lead.

The students took advantage of a very high penalty count in their favour in the second half and the GB Police team had centre Kieran Murphy sent off after 50 minutes.

The students played some good rugby and made the police team suffer for errors and being a man down for most of the half.

The police team battled on and showed real determination and desire throughout a tough second half but failed to score.

GB Police Coach Gareth Pratt praised his players for their efforts and congratulated the England Students on a fine performance.

Manager Chris Cowling thanked Mayfield Chairman Simon Howe and the rest of the Mayfield committee for staging the game at short notice and being great hosts on the night. He also thanked all the local supporters who watched the game.

The next game for GB Police team is in May against The Armed Forces before they take on GB Teachers at Mayfield in June.
