Hornets forward Warren Thompson has been released

Popular Hornets forward Warren Thompson has been released from his contract with immediate effect.

Due to a change in work circumstances, Thompson will be unable to commit to the full weekly training programme which has been set by the coaching staff for 2017.

Thompson, 26, has lead the line in two promotion campaigns over a four-year period and the prop forward played 99 games scoring 14 tries.

Hornets head coach, Alan Kilshaw, said: "It's with reluctance and regret we allow Warren to leave and we must not forget the contribution he has made to the club in his four seasons, making 99 appearances and achieving two promotions.”

Kilshaw said that the pressure of work life and Championship rugby league is difficult and praised Warren for being up front with the coaching staff.

He added: “We are at a new level now where the commitment needs to match the level of competition we are in. Warren has been up front and told us that he can't give that commitment due to changes in his employment circumstances and his honesty is commendable.

“I'm sure he will continue to play somewhere where he can manage both work and rugby under less pressure and we wish him well and the door is open for a return in the future.

"We are not actively seeking a replacement as I feel we have a plenty of depth in that position but funds are available if we decide we need another body down the track."

Chairman Mark Wynn said: “We are obviously sad to see Warren leave. We recognise that a player’s job and career comes first. Rugby league is a short career and players have to look long term. Warren leaves with our best wishes and he and his family will always be welcome back at The Crown Oil Arena.”

As part of Warren Thompson’s release terms, he will be unable to sign for another Kingstone Press Championship club in 2017.
