Hamza Khan beats Michael Connell in Liverpool by unanimous decision

Date published: 08 February 2016

Queensway Amateur Boxing Club fighter, Hamza Khan came away from the Rotunda Amateur Boxing Club in Liverpool with a unanimous decision over Michael Connell of Marsh Lane Amateur Boxing Club.

After losing his last fight, Khan was looking to get back on track with a good performance on the Liverpool boxer's home patch.

Coach John Finnerty said before the bout: "We always know when we travel down there we are up against the judges but that doesn't faze us as we train hard and prepare well."

As the bout got underway Khan started working the jab to find his range; up close he made good use of the left hook which was landing every time.

In the second round Connell stepped it up as he knew he was down a round but kept falling short to Khan's slick counters.

By the third Khan knew he had the fight in the bag but instead of risking anything he played safe keeping his hands tight and moving round the ring.

As expected, the judges came back with a unanimous decision.

Coach Finnerty added: "Every fight Hamza is getting better, his guard is getting tighter and his shot selection is better. Very happy with his performance."

Khan was back in action at Wilmslow Leisure Centre for the Macclesfield Boys home show.

Khan was up first against Louis Young Welsby.

Coach David Hodkinson said: "The plan for Hamza was to keep tight and work on the angles which he did straight away in round one."

Welsby came after Khan from the first bell trying to push the pace, however with Khan moving off on angles the Macclesfield boxer was getting frustrated and ended up being caught a number of times with the left hook of Khan.

In rounds two and three, Khan changed stances to southpaw every now and then to confuse Welsby even more.

Although the Macclesfield boxer did better in the third round, Khan came out a clear winner with all three judges giving him the nod.
