Danyal Mahmood travelled to Club 147 in Walkden for his first outing in a Queensway vest on 30 January. He was up against T Robertson of Timperly ABC in a skills contest over three one minute rounds. This type of contest is designed to give new lads a taste of what's to come before they progress to a full bout.
Normally there are conditions set for each round, first round jab only, second round one-two, third round anything goes. However, on the night the referee asked if the boxers wanted an open spar.
In the first round Mahmood used his jab well and frustrated Robertson with his footwork.
Mahmood upped the pace a little in the second round and started landing long rights down the middle whilst moving off without being counted.
In the third and final round, Mahmood was clearly a different level.
Head coach David Hodkinson said: "It was a fantastic three rounds for his first time out, using the jab to perfection then swapping between stances in the third. Footwork proved to be the key throughout the bout as the Danyal looked a different level."
