A prodigy to keep an eye on

Date published: 16 July 2012

Multi-talented Cardinal Langley RC High School pupil Kevin Metzger is well known at Rochdale AFC as a promising striker and at Sale Harriers Manchester as a sprinter and long jumper in the under 15 age group.

After a three month layoff with a fractured pelvis, Kevin decided last month to try the triple jump and entered his first competition on 16 June, the Greater Manchester Schools' Championships at Stretford, where he won with 12.12m, good enough to qualify for entry into the English Schools Athletics Association Championships, Europe's most prestigious schools athletics event widely known as 'The Kids' Olympics'.

A week later, he represented the County again in the Mason Trophy at Stoke and won again with 12.17m.

Next came the big one, the English Schools on 6 July at Gateshead where he came fourth with 12.47m.

A week later (Saturday 14 July) he competed in only his fourth ever triple jump competition in the North of England Championships at Hull where he jumped even further, a lot further, 13.39m smashing the North of England under 15 record; it puts him well into the top twenty UK all time list and number one in the UK for 2012 by a massive half a metre.

It would have easily won gold at the English Schools the previous week.

Kevin Metzger is a prodigy to keep an eye on.
